What is Silica Sol Casting?

November 11, 2024

Silica sol casting, also known as silica sol precision casting or silica sol investment casting, is a kind of high precision, high quality casting method, especially suitable for the production of complex shape and high demand of metal parts.

>>Silica sol casting process:

1. Mold design: Design a suitable mold according to the shape and size of the parts that need to be produced.

2. Wax mold production: wax mold is prepared according to the mold design.

3. Coating silica sol: Soak the wax mold in silica sol, so that the silica sol fully penetrates the surface of the wax mold and forms a coating.Then, through multiple coating and drying, multiple layers of refractory coating are formed to improve the strength and fire resistance of the cast.

4. High temperature curing: put the coated shell into a high temperature oven for curing, so that the silica sol coating is closely combined with the wax mold and hardened.

5. Firing and demoulding: Put the cured shell into the firing and demoulding furnace for high temperature firing and demoulding treatment to melt off the internal fusible material and leave the cavity as the mold.

6. Pouring metal: the sintered cast mold is put into the metal furnace, heated to the melting point, and injected with metal liquid. The metal liquid is cooled and solidified in the mold to form a part with the desired shape.

7. Mold removal and post-processing: after the metal solidification, the casting is removed from the cast and processed for mold removal.The castings are then subjected to subsequent treatments such as finishing, heat treatment and surface treatment as required to obtain the final product.

>>Applicable materials:

1. Stainless steel is the most used:

Stainless steel 201, 304, 316, 316L, etc. Mainly used for high-grade decorations, furniture appliances, precision instruments or parts;

2. Carbon steel, alloy steel:

45 steel, 35 steel, 20Cr, 20Crmo, 42Crmo, etc.;

3. Non-ferrous or rare metals:
